Taking the time and effort to go through the career discovery process has several advantages:

Ø      Knowing yourself better: People know, based on experience or intuitively, what some of their personal characteristics and preferences are. However, most people do not have a very detailed and concrete picture of these characteristics and preferences. Through the career discovery process, you can uncover an extremely detailed representation of yourself, which is actionable.

Ø      Identifying ideal work situations: You will be able to identify the industries, companies, jobs, etc. that will be a good match for you.

Ø      Attaining more enjoyment and success at work: Doing what you love and are best at, more often that not, leads to greater satisfaction, career progress and financial gain

Ø      Conducting a turbo-charged job search: The output from career discovery, enables you to effectively market and showcase yourself, during a job search. It will provide vital inputs for your resume, cover letter, interviews and much more. Furthermore, by targeting positions for which you are a great match, you increase the chances of being hired. The match is not only in terms of qualifications/experience, which is commonly how people think of it. It is also in terms of personality, culture, skills & aptitude, values and so on. This can go a long way in assuring the hiring manager, that he/she is hiring a good candidate, who will stay with the firm for longer.

Ø      Leveraging your strengths and managing your weaknesses: The discovery process is especially good at uncovering blind spots, i.e. strengths/weaknesses and their effects, that you were not explicitly aware of. Knowing how/why/when you are at your best or worst, can help you in managing a myriad situations better.
