The Truth About Jobs in Singapore for Foreigners

transition job search strategy The Truth About Jobs in Singapore for ForeignersSingapore is an attractive destination for foreigners to work in and if you are one of the people looking for jobs in Singapore for foreigners, then the following questions will probably cross your mind:

- How easy is it for foreigners, living outside of Singapore, to get a job here?

- How does one go about looking for jobs in Singapore for foreigners?

The short answer is – It is not as easy as it seems for foreigners to get jobs in Singapore and you will need to put in a lot of effort to get a job. Singapore does have/demand a lot of foreign talent but this is for specific skills/industries/levels and there is a good amount of competition from foreigners/locals already living in Singapore.

If you search online job boards/sites for Singapore, you will notice most job postings state that only Singaporeans or Permanent Residents should apply. There will be fewer listing for jobs in Singapore for foreigners, on the job sites. The reason for this simple – It is easier and more cost effective for companies to hire people who are already in Singapore, especially when these people have the talent/skills they need.

Here are a few quick suggestions, while looking for jobs in Singapore:

1) I have come across many foreigners/people who just land-up in Singapore for a very short time and without having any meetings/interviews. They hope to get interviews while they are here and/or plan to attend a career fair. In my experience this approach does not yield much success to get jobs in Singapore for foreigners, unless you spend enough time here (a few months). If you are coming for a short visit, then it is much better to have a few meetings/interviews scheduled with potential employers and recruiters before you arrive. Also please be aware that career fairs are not catering to people living outside of Singapore and will not help much

2) Don’t dismiss the online job boards altogether. You will find jobs where foreigners are eligible to apply, however, you will need to spend extra time searching for these. I recommend using a job aggregator, specifically Indeed, which will enable you to find all jobs in Singapore at one place. This includes job boards and company websites. It can save you a lot of time, as opposed to searching each site separately. Use the advanced search form, so that you can conduct a specific search (for example – one which excludes job advertisements that contain the words Singaporean, PR, Citizen, etc.).

3) Use ALL your contacts (friends, family, colleagues, association members and so on). This is probably your best bet to get leads for jobs for foreigners. Make the process easier by using online networking sites like LinkedIn

4) Be clear on your knowledge, skills and abilities and make sure that you apply to matching jobs. This will save you the time spent on applying to every job under the sun and also increase your job search success rate. Keep this in mind when contacting recruiters for jobs also

5) Prepare your marketing material very well. Your resume, cover letter and other job search material must be relevant and of high quality

6) Practice, practice and practice your interview responses and also what you will say during various other meetings

7) Be ready to compromise and take jobs which may not be your first preference, or pay you as much as you want. It is important to first get your foot in the door

Good luck!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the information.

I would like to ask if physical presence in Singapore is a "must" while on the job hunt and to what extent do employers entertain long-distance applications and interviews.

    Many thanks

    Hi Daniela,

    You are most welcome.

The answer to your question does depend on specifics to some extent – such as what your job/industry target is and what the demand/supply scenario is for the target.

However, in general, while initial stages of the application process could be done remotely, most companies will prefer to meet you in-person at some point.

    Hi Amit,

I have been here in Singapore for the past 2 months looking for a job. Until now, I haven't got any of the job I have applied. But there's one employer who offered me a contract but didn't pursue on applying for my S-Pass because my college institution (AMA Computer College) in Philippines was not recognized by MOM. Is it true that they will just reject the application of my S-Pass if it was applied by my employer? Help me please.

    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Amit,

I'm Diyana a Filipina but I'm in UAE working as a receptionist. I'm just wondering if you think I will be eligible for EPEC visa so I can go to Singapore and have ample time to searcg a job there personally? Coz I'm having a bit doubt when it comes to the University I graduated. Like Kirk I know my university is not listed (Angeles University Foundation). This the only thing I wanted to know so I can go ahead and apply for the EPEC visa soon.

Hope to hear from you soon..thanks

      Hi Diyana,

I'm afriad I can't really comment on that. It is best to check the MOM website for details and then also give them a call to ask any questions that you might have. Following that, you would just need to apply and hope for the best.

      Good luck.

It is very hard to reply to questions such as this, since there are too many variables involved.

The only way you will really know, is once you get feedback from the market. Make a few applications, talk to some hiring managers and see what their response is.

The EPEC does help in the job search, since you can spend time here in Singapore, meeting with people and interviewing. You don't have to be in Singapore all through the job search (although that is ideal) and can make a few visits every couple of weeks, when you have some interviews/meetings lined-up.

In a way the EPEC also signals to potential employers, that they will not face issues when applying for your employment pass, to work with them. That is a good thing as well

Hello Everyone. I am using this comment to reply to a number of people (namely – Alex, Mohsen, Ramesh, Harshita and Tomasz), who have similar queries.

    1) Sandbox Advisors does not offer employment agency services, so unfortunately we will not be able to connect you with potential employers. Where we can assist is by helping you execute all parts of your job search, in the best possible way, thereby increasing your chances of getting a job in Singapore. Do have a look at our Transition & Job Search services, for more information on this

    2) Conducting a cross-border job search takes a lot of effort and is also time consuming. So you need to use all possible job search techniques, which include job sites, recruiters and also networking. However, do make sure allocate your time/efforts based on which techniques are likely to get you the best results

    3) In my experience you will see less success by using job sites/boards and recruiters/employment agencies. This is because, it is quicker and more cost effective for them to hire someone locally, who meets their requirements closely. Also, with job boards, given the sheer numbers involved, it is very easy to get lost in the crowd. The case might be different if you have experience which is not available that easily in Singapore. The only way you will know where you stand, is by testing the market and seeing the feedback you get from recruiters/companies/etc

    4) In general, I would suggest spending a lot of time on online networking. The best tool for this is LinkedIn and you can get direct access to many hiring managers by using it. Have a look at some of the articles I have written on LinkedIn, Networking and Information Interviewing for more details

    5) It is very hard for me to comment on your chances of getting a job in Singapore. There are just too many variables involved. All you can do is to give it your best shot and make sure you go about the job search in the most effective manner. Please do go through the content on our website and you will find many articles/videos to help you with the job search process. I keep adding material based on queries/comments such as yours and will provide some guides on cross-border job search shortly.

Good luck to all of you and I hope your job search goes well!

    Hello Amit,

Thanks for this details, I am currently working in Europe, freshly graduated but my job here doesn’t meet my expectations at all, from the salary to what I do on a daily basis. I worth much more and have much more capacities, which is why I am planning to go looking for a job in Asia, especially Singapore. But I obviously would prefer to find the job before getting there. To be brief, I am an international business school 24-years old graduate, speaking 3 languages (english, spanish and french) and with international experience (studying and working). Interested in IT, international affairs and politics. This is more or less my background, now I am at a stage of my life when I have to make decisions and move towards a more specific and intense professional career, and I am wondering if Singapore could really be the place to go and if companies are in need of people with my kind of profile?

        February 1, 2011 | 8:14 pm

Preveena – A couple of things that you could do:

        1) Search job boards and see if you find postings which contain the name of the companies you are interested in. If the company name is not mentioned (which is often the case) try and see if you can guess the company, from the description provided. Then call the employment agency who posted the advertisement

        2) Call employment agencies who deal with the sector and ask if they have any openings for those companies

        3) Try and get in touch with the companies directly. Use LinkedIn to find and contact relevant people

    • Amit Puri - Managing Consultant, Sandbox Advisors
      February 1, 2011 | 7:58 pm

Hi Noronha – You will only know your chances and whether you skills/background are in demand, after you start actively looking for a job. Prior to that, nobody can really provide a plausible estimate of your chances.

Do consider the possibility of taking a visit pass or an EPEC, so that you can enter Singapore to meet with prospective employers. Many will request to meet with you in person, during the selection process. Once you get a job, the employer will handle processing of the employment pass.

I definitely want to do some leg work before I arrive in Singapore. I also expect a positive interest from an employer/ agency in Singapore before I can apply for a visitors visa as I am not in the position to finance mylself a trip to Singapore hunting for agencies.

        Thanks again!
        Best regards,

    Hi Amit,
I am a private banking professional with 8yrs of work ex dealing with MAS approved products for the Accredited investors. I had been to Singapore for couple of times on business visit and recently in the month of July-Aug specifically to scout for suitable opportunity in the private banking and finance domain.
I do advocate your view that it make a lot of difference if the candidate is physically present in Singapore. Hence I have decided to quit my job and relocate there so that I can scout for the opportunity in a more systematic way. Staying there is not an issue for me as my elder brother is settled out there having is own house. The only risk I am carring is temporary loss of employment and money. Is it a good stretegy? Do you think it is worth taking a risk?

      Hi Tejas,

“Is it worth taking the risk?” -> That depends on how much risk you are comfortable with and how long you are able/willing to sustain without regular income. Typically, a job search for your level of experience takes around 3 months on average (to get a job that you want). It could take more or less time, depending on the demand for people with your experience. Having a place to stay in Singapore, is definitely a big plus.

When you visited in Jul/Aug, what was the response you received from potential employers?

        Thanks for your reply.
During my visit in Jul/Aug I did meet all the prominant recruitment firms and head hunters, however the same had not materialised in to a concrete job offer. Is it because it was Q3 of the year. Does me moving during Q1/Q2 this time will help me then the earlier attempt? Pls guide.

I don’t think you should look too much into hiring cycles, since they can vary based on the year, industry, company, etc.

I suggest contacting recruiters and more importantly hiring companies directly (see relevant article – http://www.sandboxadvisors.com/insights/transition-job-search-strategy/bypassing-recruiters-job-sites-jobs-singapore/ ), to get a better sense of your chances and to arrange for some exploratory interviews (perhaps a short visit at first). Then you can take a call on the prospects and whether it makes sense to move here without a job.

    Mr. Amit
You are absolutely correct that its very difficult for the foreigners to get job in Singapore. I already experienced this as i am trying to get the job for my wife for the last 3 months. She just completed her graduation last year and came to Singapore in Nov-2010. In any newspaper when i see the recruitment adds they mainly ask for Singaporeans/PR/Malaysians. Yes i am in contact with my friend and knowns in Singapore to find the job for my wife. Right now because of the situation of market its quiet difficult but we will try our best.
Have a nice day Mr. Amit and nice to see you through the website.

      Hi Sreechowdary,

There could be a number of reasons why your job search is not going as planned. I would need more information to figure out the areas for improvement but at the outset you seem to be taking a very passive approach i.e. posting your resume and expecting employers/recruiters to call you. As a start, I would suggest going through the content under the Transition & Job Search section of our website (http://www.sandboxadvisors.com/insights/category/transition-job-search-strategy/), to get some pointers on how to go about your job search. Following that, you could call our office and I will be happy to provide some quick guidance as well.

      Hi Natalia,

I would need more information to provide some specific suggestions, such as your background, job targets, what job search methods you have been using, etc. However, in general, the best/only thing you can do is to spend enough time on your job search and make sure you conduct the search in an effective manner.

    Hi Amit,

I have been working in a software consultant firm for two and a half years and is now a technical lead. I also have a total of 4 years of experience in the software industry. I’m going to be moving to Singapore in the beginning of March and will be staying for at least 3 months. I’d love to continue my career in software in Singapore. I have also passed my first level of CFA exam lately, and will be willing to start my career in the Finance sector.

I’m wondering if you are able to provide me with any help in landing a job or at least some advice?

    • Amit Puri - Managing Consultant, Sandbox Advisors
      February 15, 2011 | 10:31 am

      Hi Ronald,

We provide services to help people through the entire job search process. Do have a look under Individuals/Transition & Job Search Strategy for more information.

When looking for a job there are three variables to keep in mind Function, Industry, Location. The more variables you change, the harder and more time consuming your job search will get. So do keep that in mind when deciding how to allocate time towards different parts of your job search. For example, if you would like another job quickly, then it would make sense to keep Function, Industry constant and after you break into the Singapore market and progress further with your CFA, you could look at finance related jobs. It could also be useful to spend at least some time right now, looking for finance jobs, just to get feedback from the market and to know where you stand.

    Dear Mr. Puri,

I’m a Canadian student finishing off my undergrad degree in HR and psychology in June this year. My boyfriend got a good job offer in Singapore, so I’m considering moving there and start my career as well. I’ve tried many job boards such as contact singapore, jobcentral, careerfinancial.sg and etc. and haven’t got any positive response. I’ve also been following up with your blogs frequently and understand it is not easy for foreigners to get a job in singapore, especailly when I’m looking for an entry-level position, and firms would mostly hire foreigners for highly skilled jobs. I’ve also tried headhunting websites such as michael page and hays, but the general response I received is that I need to be residing in Singapore to apply for the jobs. I can go to Singapore for interviews, however, I cannot arrive in Singapore without a job since I need an employer to sponsor me for a work visa. My career focus is towards HR, bur right now, I’m willing to take anything. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for my situation! Many thanks in advance!!

    Jade

    • Amit Puri - Managing Consultant, Sandbox Advisors
      February 15, 2011 | 9:55 am

      Hi Jade,

If you would like to search for jobs, while being present in Singapore, you could consider applying for an Employment Pass Eligibilty Certificate (EPEC). This will alllow you to be in Singapore for an extended period of time, in order to look for jobs. With a Canadian passport, an alternative would be to visit for short stays (30 to 90 days at present, from what I understand).

With job boards, it is a numbers game to quite an extent i.e. you need to apply to enough jobs to get some response. As a thumb rule, expect to hear back from 5-10 employers, for every 80-100 applications made. Also, it is best to limit your applications to jobs which don’t require you to be a Singaporean Citizen/PR.

In addition to recruiters and job boards, it is important that you try online/physical networking as well.

      Hi Anoop,

You could check the jobs boards in Singapore to see what openings there might be available. Also try contacting come recruiters. Then do some research to shortlist some companies that you might be interested in and try contacting people in those companies (use google and LinkedIn to get contacts).

    Hi Amit,

Thanks for the information, This information is extremely important for a newbie expariates .

I am from India working as an ESL teacher in china since 2009, I’d like to apply for PGDE from NIE, I want to know after doing this course, does the foreigner equally gets the job offer as the other singaporean or do they have any discrimination regarding hiring foreigners.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Manju

    • Amit Puri - Managing Consultant, Sandbox Advisors
      February 26, 2011 | 6:17 pm

      Most welcome Manju.

It is very hard to keep track of specifics such as this for all occupations. In general, there are a lot of jobs for which Singaporean Citizens/PRs are preferred, since it is easier to hire them (and in some cases it is mandatory to hire a certain proportion of Citizens/PRs). So that is a roadblock that is faced in general. However, there are jobs available for foreigners as well and the amount varies by function/sector/seniority/etc.

The only way (and also the most credible) to you will know where you stand, is to test the market and get feedback.

    Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to address all the questions which follow the format

“I am working as _________ in _________ industry and in _______ country. Please provide advice/suggestions/ideas/opportunities for getting a job in Singapore”

To answer the question -> There is no secret formula that I have which will help you get a job in Singapore. To find a job in any place (including Singapore), the things you need to do are:

    1) Do some initial research to get information on your target job/sector (requirements, prospects, etc), types of visas, procedure for visa application, etc. Make any required preparations accordingly

    2) Prepare a good resume/cover letter and practice your interview responses

    3) Search and apply for jobs on local/niche job boards

    4) Contact recruiters/employment agencies to see if they can help

    5) Contact hiring managers and other people in your target companies directly. Use your existing contacts for this and also engage in online networking, using tools like LinkedIn

    6) Diligently track/monitor all your job search activities, so you know what’s working and what isn’t. Change your approach accordingly

    7) Keep getting feedback from the market i.e. whenever you manage to speak with a recruiter or hiring manager ask them how competitive your background is, get suggestions for companies/roles you could target, ask what you need to do in order to be more competitive (e.g. get a particular certification), etc.

8.) If you are not seeing much success, then it might make sense to put the job search on hold and based on the feedback you get from the market, do whatever needs to be done to become a competitive candidate

There are a number of articles/videos on our website which provide practical tips on all the above. Do have a look at the Transition & Job Search Strategy category.

So there is not much more advice that I can provide for general questions such as “Can I get a job in Singapore”, “How do I get a job in Singapore” , “Any advice for getting a job in Singapore” , “Are there job opportunities for people with my background in Singapore” and so on. For this you will need to refer to the points I outlined above, read the material on our website and dive into the job search.

Where I could help and be of use, is if you have specific questions on a particular strategy/suggestion/piece of information in our articles, or if you need help with specific roadblocks that you are facing during your job search. Just post a comment under the relevant article or send us an email and I will be sure to revert.

    Good luck!

Hi, I have completed my six sigma black belt and have 4+ yrs experience in quality. how is the job market in singapore for quality professionals. Do i have to get PR before applying. how do i apply for PR

    Thanks
    Metilda

    • Amit Puri - Managing Consultant, Sandbox Advisors
      March 1, 2011 | 7:24 pm

      Hi Metilda,

Nowadays for getting a PR, you first need to live in Singapore for some time, show decent earnings potential and also some commitment towards living here for the medium/long term.

For your job search you have the following options:

      - Apply for jobs, secure an offer and then the employer will apply for an employment pass for you. Till you get a job you can visit Singapore for interviews/etc. with an EPEC, Visit Pass, or just based on your passport
      - Apply for a PEP if you are eligible and then find employment in Singapore. In this case employers will only have to send a letter to the Ministry of Manpower as notification for employing you. There is no application process, so it’s easier for employers

Have a look at the MOM website for more information – http://www.mom.gov.sg/foreign-manpower/passes-visas/Pages/default.aspx

I agree to what you have written in your article (as above). And the fact is that not only do foreigners find difficulty in getting a job here, but so do locals too. Hi Anu. I think it would be good to test the market first, so you can gauge the demand for your profile. Try to arrange for meetings/interviews with relevant people while in India and then visit Singapore for 1-2 weeks once you have some leads setup.

We can certainly speak as well. Just call on our board line and ask for me

yea, I agree with you. But I think if you have some outstanding skills, its easy to get a job in Singapore. I know that some Singapore companies go to China and hire college students for jobs. They get S$1500-2000.

      Hi XinXin,

Yes, for people with specific skills (which are in demand) and those with excellent qualifications/background, it is easier to get jobs in Singapore (or anywhere else for that matter)

        Hi Amit,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I would be coming to Singapore in mid July. I and my wife are very sure we need to settle in Singapore. My spouse is confident of landing up a job here after her studies. As I have decided not to study, I need to find the job in Singapore now.

    Dear Amit:
After graduating in US, I moved to Singapore last couple months and was looking for the jobs in here. I had been submitted my resume since then through company’s websites or job portals, e.g. jobsdb, jobstreet, jobcentral, indeed, and recruit.net. But, it turned out nothing although the job itself matched my skills very well. I am so desperately and badly need a job in Singapore. I need help. How can I get a job here? I have been very depressed since then. I have the skills and knowledge but why I don’t have the opportunities in Singapore. Please tell me what I should do from now.
    Sincerely,

      Hi Netty,

Thank you for taking the time to write a comment.

To start with – don’t worry.

Finding jobs in Singapore for foreigners, is not rocket science. It’s just that people tend to make the same mistakes, don’t spend time on the most productive job search methods and don’t use all available job search avenues. That results in a slow job search.

I will send you an email to discuss how we might be able to help.

      Talk soon.

    Hi Amit,
Thank you for all your advices in the previous post. Most of my questions were already answered and gave me a clearer picture of what to expect once I visit Singapore and look for a job. As much as we want to believe in positive thinking and luck, being prepared , knowing what would work and having a more systematic way of doing things gives us a better chance of success.

I am currently an Asst .Operations Manager for one of the BPOs/call centers here in Manila with a total of 8 year experience in the call center/customer service industry. I plan to explore career opportunities in Singapore this coming March 2012. Like what you have advised in some of the other posts, I will be currently sending my resume to potential employers, contact employment agencies, get in touch with companies directly, and will get some contacts in Linkedin. Hopefully by doing this, I would be able to get some interviews, then take a leave and go to Singapore so I can test the waters first.

I would appreciate any referrals, leads or contact persons that you may refer who can assist me in my job search there. Feel free to contact me at my mobile: +63 9189270331 (Ces, Manila Philippines) or my friend’s no who currently resides at SG: +65 90482750 (Diane). I will be living with her once I visit Singapore. You may also send me an email.

Looking forward to seeing you and hearing from you soon.

    Thank you!

People with good international qualifications and experience, do find jobs in Singapore. But it’s very hard to predict the success for a particular individual because of the number of variables involved. You husband will only know his chances and the demand for his profile, after he starts his job search here.

    Dear All

It looks like the Indian sub continents wants to work in Singapore? Why? India is booming as well? I have a different problem after reading indepth on this forum.

We are living in Europe (not UK) and we have a balance lifestyle envied by others. We do not drive around in flashy cars nor influenced by designer outfits except our leafy neighbourhood speaks for itself already. We go on regular long haul destination(s) when the school vacation period is on.

To cut it short, my wife is in LOVE with Singapore and wants to work here for the vibrant environment and FOOD paradise. She knows Singapore well as a regular tourist and knows that our lifestyle will change if we work here. She is back at home by 5pm daily with the children. Head hunters is more than willing to answer her call.

Any suggestions on how to convince her not to come other than getting the lawyer involved?

    Constructive feedback is welcome

While I am on an EP, she is on a DP. She has more than 6 years experience in the IT field and has experience with top IT firms only. She is a Bachelors in Technology from an institute in the MOM list.

We need help with her employment, as I am here for a very long term (basically moved headcount to Singapore rolls). Since we are here for long, willing to spend time here and be available for face-to-face interviews. We have applied on multiple portals, forums for the past 4 months and have been approached by consultants to no avail – probably because she is on a DP.

    Would really appreciate any guidance/help.

    Hello,

I have two main questions. First question is regarding work visas. I may have an opportunity to work in Singapore, which my company may sponsor visas for myself and potentially my wife as well. However, if my company does not provide my wife with visas, is there a possibility for her to obtain working visas?

Second question, assuming she gets working visas, are there companies looking to hire Marketing candidates? My wife has extensive beverage and package goods experience.

    Thanks for your help!

      Hello AP,

If you get an Employment Pass from your company, then it usually pretty straightforward to get a Dependent Pass for your wife, based on that. She can only get an Employment Pass after she gets a job in Singapore.

There will always be companies that are looking to hire :) – she’ll just have to start looking for a job and see how it goes.

    Hello there,

I am in India. And I am looking for a job since one yr. I am using Jobstreet / jobscentral / ST701 / JobsDB since then in Bio Technology related section.

I have a Girlfriend that is Singaporean. And I wanna find a job in Singapore so we can be together. Send out over 150 applications. And I get no replies.

It’s really hard for a foreigner to find a job. I don’t know who ever told me it’s easy. Because it ain’t.

I have been working in India in an BT( Lifeceicenc ) company for over 1 years. And it was kinda said when I quit my job. But I wanted to risk it.

And now I can’t get my feet on the ground of Singapore.

If someone can help me out. Feel free to email me:

      Hi Rohit,

Unfortunately I really can’t predict your chances of finding a job in Singapore, since there are too many variables involved.

Before you visit, it is better to get some feedback from the market on the demand for your background and also setup a few exploratory meetings/interviews. In addition to job sites try using LinkedIn for this.
